Hip Hop Geniuses

Genius refers to a person, a body of work, or a singular achievement of surpassing excellence. More than just originality, creativity, or intelligence, genius is associated with achievement of insight which has transformational power. A work of genius fundamentally alters the expectations of its audience. Although difficult to quantify, genius refers to a level of aptitude, capability or achievement which exceeds even that of most other exceptional contemporaries in the same field.

Under consideration that it is strongly a stereotype, but in soooo many cases a reality, it HAS to count for something that most hiphop artists come up against so many obstacles in their "hoods" to get a shot at being center stage and putting their thoughts on records. They should be generally more talented and more clever than your regular homie to be "make it". But let's break it down to pin point our "exceptional contemporary" hiphop geniuses.

Sadly by todays standards, a good percentage of hiphop artists are more creative marketing than creative talent, which just makes it easier to sift through whats left to locate the virtuosos.

The hardest part is agreeing on who deserves the title. I know half of y'all are thinking about André 3000, while the other half are torn between looking for some underground underdog that deserves the mention, like J Dilla, or some crazy motherfucka like ODB.

I am just gonna highlight one this time. There is one person in hiphop that abso-fuckin-lutely does his own deep sometimes-highly-political-sometimes-just-playing lyrics, his own perfectly sung hooks, his own funky beats, his own amazing jazz keys, sometimes his own album covers.. and sheeeit, he has so much talent in his own persona that he ends up inventing other personalities to invent more!!

Hip Hop world. I present to you the GENIUS: SHOCK G.

Here's a list of shit that he's done:

- Created a crew. Born Leader! what other MC has created a crew of MC's, Dj's, Dancers, Top Notch Producers and weed carriers. We can't leave out the fact that due to his eye and ear for talent, he helped put Tupac on the map. Not a small thing. Quite a few MC's and groups from the DU crew got a chance to do something bigger for themselves: Tupac, Raw Fusion, Gold Money, Saafir and quite a few more affiliates.

- Was head producer in charge of the D.U. sound, and although some people might not recall it, Shock was all over the Funk samples, digging DEEP waaaay before any G Funk was coming out, waaaaay before sampling Parliament was the norm.

- Speaking of samples, he was sample chopping before anyone else. OK, this is just my theory and I would love to be right, but if anyone can come strong with proof of the otherwise, then I will just give him this title. He was chopping up samples while Primo was just learning to lace samples over beats.

- He drew all those funky comics throughout D.U.'s history as the artist "Rackadelic"

- this one is amazing: he played tons of keyboards but always credited as "The Piano Man", with Raw Fusion even doing a toe-to-toe song with him called "Rockin to the P.M." Also on Doowutchyalike, The Piano Man has a crazy break where he plays a collection of famous songs, but only one compass of each one. I contacted him on Myspace a while back just to ask him what songs he played. I said, "I got PE's Black Steel, BDP's Bridge is Over, and a few more.. but please tell me which other ones were played". He answered: "Funkadelic- All Your Goodies Are Gone, Do ya Wanna-Al B Sure, Bob James (forgot the name of the song, but it's also part of Jazzy Jeffs famous instrumental scratch record), the beat to "Jane" by EPMD. I think that's it." But also, there is another piano break on the "Raw Fusion" Remix too.

Piano Man Solos:

Doowutchyalike - RAW FUSION REMIX:

Doowutchyalike - Original

- and the most noticeable, biggest thing Shock G brought into the world of music was his presentation of Edward Ellington Humphrey III, former lead singer of "Smooth Eddie and the Humpers," who only became a rapper after burning his nose in a kitchen accident with a deep-fryer, aka HUMPTY HUMP.

- He had many alter-egos so that he could justify his multiple personality disorder, beside the obvious Humpty Hump, who was even bigger than Shock G himself!, he also rapped under the name of MC Blowfish whenever he needed to rhyme "under water". He even did the "The Computer Woman", the female voice announcements that appear on a quite a few tracks, including Doowutchyalike.

I don't think any person deserves such a title as Genius, but Shock has earned it over the years of putting out high quality productions. I know I got a few other names that need the "Genius" initials to along side of it.

Hen - The Underworld (Atlanta 1994)

This an unsung classic out of Atlanta, Georgia. It's pretty rare, I have seen it selling in the 100 dollar range on ebay. My favorite track is probably number 7. Hen is not some playalistic shit like Outkast, or booty shakin' garbage like 2 Live Crew. Hen dances to the beat of a different drummer. This album is gritty, funky, infectious. I hope you like it as much as I do.

Vaporized Blends: Wu Freestyles

If you've been following T.R.O.Y. since the beginning you know that our friend Vaporized can throw together some great blends. Whether he's throwing Nas vocals over Godfather Don and 45 King productions or matching AZ acapellas to Hydra beats, the kid puts in work. Now he's back with a little something differet for the Wu Tang aficianados:

this is a 13+ minute continuous freestyle from '96 with Cappadonna, Timbo King and U-God spitting over random breakbeats, blended with some kick ass beats by QDIII, Godfather Don, Rockwilder etc.

the original freestyle is from Wild Style Freestyle Allstars Vol.2. unfortunately I had to cut out Ghostface's verse out of this, but all the random chatter/false starts/mess ups are cut also. this was fairly difficult to construct but I think it kind of works...

Sounds enticing, innit? Download it or stream it here: http://www.box.net/shared/eyy9tstbyn

Dusty Fingers: Volume 16

If you have followed the Dusty Fingers series and are wondering when the hell this volume dropped, well, it didn't. Not really. Not on vinyl, at least. You had to have bought the complete collection on CD to get this one. It comes in a nice little package and contains all 16 volumes plus 3 volumes of Schoolyard Breaks, and everything is in MP3 and WAV format. You can cop here. Or try to find a better deal elsewhere.

For those who don't know, after the Lenny "Break Beat" Robert's (RIP) highly praised Ultimate Breaks and Beats series came Dusty Fingers. Going above and beyond any of the others, Dusty Fingers is arguably the greatest break beat and rare gem compilation series of all time. Danny Dan The Beat Man laid a foundation of the illest breaks, from rare soul to foreign soundtracks, for some of your favorite producers to sample from. Don't be fooled, a LOT of producers used these for some dope songs.

Legend has it that, at one point, Dan had so much vinyl, one day the floorboards at his mother's apartment collapsed and his records almost killed a kid living downstairs. Damn.

These aren't the compilations that would come out after something was sampled, saying who sampled what. Many of the greats, besides digging on their own, also looked to Danny Dan for the freshness.
Enjoy this 16th volume of Dusty and be sure to go all the way back to Volume 1 for some great music that has heavily influenced our music from 1997 to today.

Dancehall/Raggamuffin Meets Hip Hop

Being raised in an all Trini neighbourhood, I was fortunate enough to grow up with dancehall and hiphop, and I always thought that when they crossed over, it was the shit.

Who didn't shit themselves when NWA came out with "Always Into Somethin'" and Admiral D busted shots with his raggastyle! Then Ice Cube copied them with "Wicked". But then Cypress copied him with "Lick a Shot".

Anyways... I mixed up this album, NOT JUST A COMPILATION, for those who want some raggatunez, dancehall and dub bass funkin the trunk out of their automobiles.

Enjoy the link! -- Cenzi

A4 Resurrection '95 Acapella
B1 Resurrection '95 Instrumental
B2 Resurrection Extra P. Instrumental
B3 Resurrection Large Professor Instrumental

Before downloading, remember I put all these singles and samples in one folder at the bottom of the page. This is just if you already have something and don't want to download it all.

Resurrection CD Single
01. Resurrection '95 (Dirty)
02. Resurrection (Extra P. Remix)(Dirty)
03. Resurrection (Large Professor Remix)(Dirty)
04. Chapter 13 (Dirty)
05. Soul By The Pound (Thump Mix)(Dirty)

So, you had to know this would be brought up here eventually. I'm not gonna get into how great the album was, what my favorites were off of it, how crazy I thought Communism was, or any of that at this time. Right now, it's all about one of the possibly greatest records to own, just for the remixes. I remember feeling stupefied when I first heard both remixes on the same night. I figured that one of them had to be unofficial or a really great homegrown remix. But when I copped the promo a week or two later and realized that they were both on the record and both done by the Large Professor, well, shit. And I only recently realized that only the CD single had the dirty versions, so you're gonna want to download everything here at the bottom of the post.

Which is your favorite is the question, though.
No ID's album version?
It's great in it's own right. I love that piano loop and here's the video-

Or the good mood inducing, summer day on your way out the city to the beach feeling, Large Professor Remix?

Or is it the Extra P Remix? This is my personal favorite and always has been. Some people can favor one today and the other tomorrow. This is so great with the night time 95 groove. That sample just blew my mind and still does. He was catching samples nobody else will ever be able to match.
Just plain awesome.

The Samples:
Ahmad Jamal - Dolphin Dance (og 95 mix sample snippet)

David Axelrod - The Signs Part2 (large professor remix sample snippet)

Spirit - Ice (extra p remix sample snippet)

[Download every song in this post in one folder here], including full versions of the samples.
Sorry no drum breaks. Gotta find those yourself. But if you're really fiending for them, drop a comment and I'll send you in the right direction.

Let us know your favorite mix in the comments. So far, at the T.R.O.Y. forum, the Extra P Remix has a commanding lead. But the og No ID mix is on the creep...
