Boston Underground - Volume Two (1993-1997)

Ok Boston locals, give me the lowdown. What are the best spots for picking up (used) vinyl ? I'm out here on the west coast but next time I make it back that way I want to know where to hunt. I did a trip there in 2006 but didn't have time for any crate digging. Alas. This compilation is something I put together back in 2007. It is volume 2 of an 8 part series. I figure most of the tracks here are already familiar to underground heads, but it's still a good lineup. Put the needle on and listen up. Okay, okay click the play button and then listen up. Here's a link and the tracklist.

Ras Kass - The Endangered Lyricist

Just today I received an email from Kris over at Ras Kass Central, where he has a Canibus-like online following and I noticed they're starting this campaign called "Save Ras Kass." Now, it's no secret that he is one of my favorite lyricists of all-time. It's no secret that T.R.O.Y. has showed Ras Kass more love than most rappers discussed here. In fact, I'm willing to bet there hasn't been a blog out there that has come close to what we have done as far as support goes.

Just check the record.

Ras Kass - What Could Have Been?

Ras Kass - Non-Album Tracks (1994-1996)

All The Ras Kass Singles That Really Matter
Help A Blogger Out: Won't Catch Me Runnin'
Ras Kass - On Earth As It Is...Remix?
Ras Kass - Soul On Ice Demo (Remastered)

So getting back to this viral marketing they're doing. What exactly does Ras Kass need saving from? He is no longer in prison. He is no longer signed to Priority Records (at least, I believe so). He is no longer beefing with established rappers (who aren't nearly as talented as he is) like Game. So basically Ras Kass needs saving from Ras Kass. Maybe it's the folks he surrounds himself with. Maybe it's his management? Maybe, just maybe Ras Kass needs go back to the basics and realize what made him the lyricist he is today.

Below we're sold on "15 of Ras Kass' classic songs to remind everyone why Ras Kass is one of the top 5 emcees. " yet we all can look at this track list and easily pick apart a handful of selections that are suppose to help remind us of his G.O.A.T. status. No Sonset? No Etc.? No Jack Frost? No Music Bizness? No Oral Sex (pause)? No Won't Catch Me Runnin"? No Remain Anonymous?

You know the saying you only get one chance for a first impression? Well he's had multiple chances and he still isn't getting it right. I'm not here to pick apart what Ras does, it's only because I have so much respect and expectation for him as an emcee that I feel this adamant about his career and his choices he has made over the years. So download this mixtape and hear glimpses of why Ras Kass was once not to be fucked with and hopefully he'll find his way back home. We've all been waiting. Hip-hop has been waiting. - Jason Gloss

North & South Carolina Underground Part 3

This is the 3rd compilation I've done with North and South Carolina hip hop. If you missed the first two you can check them out here--

http://philaflava.blogspot.com/2009/01/north-vs-south-carolina-1994-2001.html

http://philaflava.blogspot.com/2009/06/north-south-carolina-underground-part-2.html

This volume is a nice mix of smooth gangsta rap and more traditional east coast hip hop. The southeast has me hooked and after listening you'll see why. Here's a link and the tracklist.

Babbletron - Mechanical Royalty

Babbletron is a group from New York, consisting of three members, Cool Calm Pete, Jaymanila and DJ Pre.

I don't know exactly if this is their first official album, cause i've seen they released a vinyl named Ramblers Anonymous in 2002, but there is full length album circulating over the internet, named Ramble At A Discount, so i don't know what's the real story behind that, is it official release or not.

Production was handled by DJ Pre, except three tracks, #3 (RJD2), #6 (DOOM) & #7 (Ese).

Scientifik “Non-Album Bonus Track”

I had found this one listed on the web, but all the links were dead. So I did a little leg work and tracked down DJ Funkdoc (Germany represent!) who created this remix. Unfortunately we didn't connect in time for the initial post the other day.

New Jersey Underground Parts 9 And 10 (1989-1999)

My New Jersey series has taken a backseat for awhile now. There are some bangers here I had forgotten about. Some of the more obscure selections are probably Two Weary Travelers, The Outz and Corrupt Empire. 'Get High' is from a 'Priority Records Sampler' tape. Posting these compilations makes me remember tons of classic tracks that have slipped from my mind. These lineups will keep you coming back..

More than anything, I am trying to capture the sound of a particular state when I do these regional compilations. I know there are probably things mislabeled here, but I'm hoping y'all will forgive me. Leave some thoughts, tell me what's new to you and what you've heard. I love putting these 'Garden State' collections together. Thanks for reading. Jersey stand up!

Ego Trip's Great Fuckin' Clean Versions

"This one definitely goes out on a censorship tip
So everybody sit back, relax and have a champagne sip"

None of us like clean radio versions! Every time your hear something, it's always gotta be raw uncensored! That's the truth! Some artists just have their curse words bleeped on for their clean versions while other actually record a new version with changed vocals. Some don't have new vocals but instead of it just being muted, scratching and sound effects are used to replace these blanks. A list titled "Great Fuckin' Clean Versions" from Ego Trip's Book of Rap List basically listed the clean versions that were worth listening to. Like Thun said, "Ego Trip made it a hot list, we made it a hot compilation". Last year, I compiled DJ Premier's Underacknowledged Cuts from Ego Trip's list. It received props all over the net.. even from Elliot Wilson! Enjoy this one!
