Poops Spotlight Pt.2 (WKCR,WNYU Demos)

A
couple of months ago, we re-introduced you to the incredible emcee who fell off the face of the rap game before he even really got started, Poops. Refer to this link, you won't be disappointed - Part 1
This time around we bring you four more ill appearances from the god; including cuts with Pumpkinhead, A Butta[Natural Elements], Automatic, and a freestyle session from an episode of the legendary Stretch & Bobbito show.

The first cut is a promo called Flushed that was a collaborative effort with Pumpkinhead and most likely produced by FB. This was originally aired on Stretch & Bobbito but re-aired on the 10th Planet radio show[co hosted by yours truly] on WPRB. I no longer have any of the original tapes of the 10th Planet, but am in the process of regaining a good amount of them on mp3 through a follower of the T.R.O.Y. blog. Sean g. responded in the comments of the original Poops post and we've been corresponding since. So, you can thank him for coming through with this one. Peep his blog out here, it's a pretty interesting hodge podge of cool shit worth checking out.

The second joint is a freestyle with Pumpkinhead live on the Stretch & Bobbito show. They go back and forth for few dope verses over some pretty ill beats that I still haven't identified. Unfortunately it's not the entire session, but it's a solid couple of verses you should enjoy. Thanks to Roy Johnson for uploading this at the T.R.O.Y. forum.

The last two joints were re-discovered by Nes over at the Dirtywaters blog. The first one is another solo banger of a demo called Suckas. I had this one on tape years ago and lost the tape within a week of having it. The other track, Lyrics, is another collabo featuring Automatic, A Butta, and once again Pumpkinhead. I believe this was originally aired on WNYU.

Do yourself a favor and don't sleep on any of these tracks. Poops was a goat in the making, in my opinion. It's a shame that he gave up so soon.

Guilty Pleasures

A few months ago I shared with you my security blanket, this month I'm going to share with you some of my guilty pleasures.

Everyone has a few albums in their collection they've been questioned for liking or you might even question it yourself. Maybe it's an album that received lukewarm reviews or an album you flat out know is bad. Maybe it's an album most people have grown out but regardless you still appreciate the fuck out of it.

I have a few of these in my collection and I have no problem admitting they are some of my most listened to albums. The first one is what I like to think of as the ultimate summertime soundtrack. Ill and Al were far from dope lyricists but they had swagger and even though this album only has 12 songs, it centers around three standout tracks and the rest were either remixes or they switched some of the lyrics around to make them appear like different tracks.

I remember hearing "Where My Homiez?" (click for video) play constantly on Yo! MTV Raps and every time I'd have to stop what I was doing to watch it. When I said Creep Wit Me was a great summertime album I meant it.

Whether you took a ride down Fulton Street or A1A this was the ultimate backdrop. I distinctly remember taking those late-night trips to Denny's with the crew after a night of partying & bullshit. I remember the weekend excursions to the beaches rockin' the Nike visor cap (as seen worn by Al in the video) that became popular in the summer of '94 or how right before a game of b-ball we'd get amped to "Creep With Me" (title track) because the Snoop sample was the definition of perfection. I remember making the quintessential date night mixtape that had both "Summertime (It's All Good)" and "I'll Take Her" featuring Brian McKnight on there.

Yeah, Ill Al Scratch were the shit and Creep Wit Me is my guilty pleasure for sure.

Next up is an album that most of us probably grew out of by 1996, but not me. What's crazy is that when the album dropped (1994) I was in 10th grade and I remember thinking how dope this little kid was but now after doing some research I found out the kid is actually older than me.

Shyheim aka The Rugged Child was born in '77, in Brooklyn. His affiliation had everything to do with his semi-success in rap as he was considered the youngest Wu-Tang Clan affiliate in the game. If you remember back in '94 the Wu phenomenon was absolutely crazy. Also having Ghostface Killah as your cousin couldn't hurt either.

Shy moved to Staten Island from Brooklyn living in the Stapleton Houses, where many Wu members lived. At the age of 14, Shy recorded his debut "On & On" for Virgin and months later the album, AKA The Rugged Child dropped. All but one track was produced by RNS. Many may not know about the RNS and that is the way he likes it. He's never been into the spotlight but that doesn't mean he didn't deserve it. RNS has worked with other Shaolin artists such as UMC's, GP Wu, King Just and RZA's Gravediggaz. It's also been mentioned serval times that RNS was the one who taught RZA the art of production.

AKA The Rugged Child is an album I thoroughly enjoy and even though I'm three decades old and cannot stand listening to kid rappers, I'll never turn my nose up to some Shyheim. He might have been young at the time but unlike many kid rappers Shy had some great tutelage and never came with those infantile raps.

So if you're new to the album I suggest you give it a shot. Some of my favorite cuts are On & On, One's 4 Da Money, Napsack, Here I Am and Headpiece. I've also added some b-sides and remixes for your listening pleasure. --Philaflava

Showbiz & A.G. "Broken Chains" (Unreleased 1990-1992)

Showbiz & A.G. - Broken Chains (Soul Clap & Runaway Slave Unreleased 1990-1992)

Well this time we were not the first to get it or host it, but you can't win every race, right. Big up to Jaz, Crates Of AG, Freestyle Records, Unkut, and The Beatbox Radio Show.

This also bring us to this week's poll. Last week we ran a poll on live shows, and voters decided, by a very slim margin, that the Wu-Tang Clan put on the best performance out of the old schoolers still touring. De La came in second. This week, however, we're voting on the best recently unearthed rarity that T.R.O.Y. has hosted, including the one that is the subject of this post, so move on down to the right sidebar and cast your ballot. An informed vote is the best kind, so click on the link under the poll to catch up.

And now back to Showbiz & A.G. "Broken Chains."

Here's the download: CLICK

Here's the info:

Showbiz & A.G. – Broken Chains: Soul Clap & Runaway Slave Unreleased, 1990-1992

Previously thought lost forever, these masters recently resurfaced and have yielded a treasure trove of unreleased vocal and instrumental tracks from the incredibly fruitful recording sessions leading up to one of the most important Hip Hop albums of all time.

Included in this package are three previously unreleased original versions for songs produced by Showbiz that would eventually become Soul Clap EP and Runaway Slave LP classics but in different forms. Also included, from the same sessions, is a previously unreleased Diamond D production featuring A.G. Finally, rounding out the package, are 7 unreleased instrumental productions by Showbiz from the Runaway Slave sessions. As a special bonus, Freestyle Records has thrown in an untitled cut by D-Flow & Party Arty from 1995 produced by Showbiz.

Due to the importance of this project, Freestyle Records has chosen to release these 12 cuts on a double vinyl format with a picture cover as follows:

Touring The States: Boston, MA

The T.R.O.Y. Blog would like to present you "Touring The States" post. We will sit in our Camaro and take a ride around the States in search of albums that you might never heard of. We will pick up the albums or singles, which doesn't have that so called title "classic", but for sure having great songs, vibe and it will be perfect joy for your ears. Stay tunned, we will feed you with this two times per month, maybe more.

Paw-Dukes was born in Miami Fla. and raised in Brooklyn, New York and now reside in Massachusetts. He started dipping in music at the tender age of 14. He credits life’s experiences as his most influential backdrop. Introduced to the art of rhyming by a family friend, Paw-Dukes formed a group with his younger brother Carolina Gus (then know as Finch) and performed at various venues and colleges. Carolina Gus moved on and went to join the army. Paw-Dukes stayed behind to finish what they began. In the late 90’s Paw-Dukes recorded a single through an independent label (now defunct) to put out a stellar underground maxi single. In 2000 that single was followed up by an even bigger single “C’est La Vie”. Unfortunately this would be the last time that the underground market would receive such an offering. Through frustration and heartbreak Paw-Dukes and the label parted ways. Now in 2000-now, with no label backup, Paw-Dukes finds himself on that same journey which he took when he was 14. This time he is equipped with a business mind and an arsenal of music. Paw-Dukes states, “I am bringing to the table the essence of raw hip hop and the vibe that was big in the mid 90’s”. Don’t get it twisted this kid can write a hit song. “I’m from that same era that spawned “Illmatic”, “Reasonable Doubt” and “Ready to Die”, so it’s only right that I pay tribute to the guys who paved the way”. He also went to say “without taking credit away from today’s artist (they are all great in their own rights), but Hip Hop or rap whatever they are calling it these days is lost and the youth is lost with them, so I am here to bring it back”.
Only question i have is, is yall ready for Paw-Dukes?

Crustified Dibbs - Night Of The Bloody Apes(Remastered)

We come to you today bearing bad news in one hand and a gift in the other. T.R.O.Y. forum resident blendologist supreme, vaporized, has been struck with the hardship of a completely broke down laptop. Thus rendering him incapable of contributing any more monumental blends or mixes until he obtains a new workstation. I will list below all the incredible work that was done by vaporized, in the past 6 months, and wish him a full online recovery.

Before vaporized lost his laptop powers, he left us with this nice piece of work that cannot be found anywhere else in the blogosphere or message board realm. He took the initiative to remaster the highly sought after shelved debut album by
Crustified Dibbs called Night Of The Bloody Apes. According to discogs, this was released on CD, but as far as I knew it was only on cassette. I don't claim that this is CDQ or VBR, but it sounds a hell of a lot better than the versions that have been floating around the web for the past years. I don't even claim that this is a classic album in any shape or form. To be honest, the album is, well,......pretty bad. But, for me, it's worth having just for the frustrated emcee anthem Every Record Label Sucks Dick. Included as a bonus cut is the Biggie Smalls featured cut Cunt Renaissance Remix.

Previews:

Crustified Dibbs - Every Record Label Sucks Dick

Crustified Dibbs(ft. Biggie Smalls) - Cunt Renaissance Remix

If you weren't aware, Crustified Dibbs went on to become RA The Rugged Man and has released music much better than this album, in my humble opinion. I believe on that Cunt Renaissance Remix above, he had already changed his name for that record. Check him out here for some more recent tracks and info. Here's a few joints you probably already know by him -

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Agallah) - Till My Heart Stops

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Sadat X) - 50,ooo Heads Remix

R.A. The Rugged Man(ft. Blackmarket Militia) - The Renaissance

New Jersey Underground Part 4 (1992-1997)

Comin at ya with style on New Jersey Underground Volume 4. Check out the tracks by Mr Low Kash, The Undatakaz and F.O.A., if you are a fiend for obscure hip hop from the Garden State. Of note is the track by Maniac Mob. They were one of the dopest crews I've come across but their output was pretty limited. The rest of this mix is laced too so y'all will probably dig it. Hoping there are new tunes in here for our readers so let us know!

Rap Blogosphere Standouts (1st Quarter 2009)

'Cause we could and we would bust a cap ... just to put our homies on the map

Back in January we linked you to the best links the blogosphere had to offer from October-December. Today's focus is somewhat different, though. Rather than honor every instance in which somebody linked a cool interview on youtube or provided a basic review of a throwback album, we are instead focusing in on those blog posts that contribute something new and/or novel to the existing body of knowledge.

Oh, sure, it's an arbitrary call. And it seems like we're disparaging the efforts of bloggers who regularly post content without much commentary, or who stick to basic reviewery. This is not the case at all, however. We acknowledge that the rap blogosphere requires a mixed approach. Not every single post will successfully contribute original or provocative insight. Not every blogger is a great writer. Not every bit of content requires explication. And of course the binary in question is problematic . What about novel, creative blogger-generated content? Aren't the acts of seeking out content, "digging" if you will, laborious, unappreciated, and a huge part of this whole rap thing to begin with?

Hell, our approach here at T.R.O.Y. is decidedly mixed. But as we move ahead, our goals are to move away from mere uploads as much as humanly possible. And frankly, we'd like to see more of an attempt made at generating ideas (in contradistinction to simply conveying opinions, word to Noz) throughout the blogosphere. That doesn't mean we're going cease posting amazing finds, elusive exclusives, or do the work of skimming the best material from your lifeless posts. Nor does it mean that we don't appreciate blogs who shower us with great multimedia finds. But we will increasingly incorporate analysis wherever necessary, and for now we'd like to recognize the posts from other blogs that stand out for their originality, focus, usefulness for research, or simply for being interesting. This is not a comprehensive list and it reflects mostly my own sense of what is good or important. I kept it limited to the type of content that I felt would directly appeal to readers of this blog). The blogs I link are not one or two-hit wonders, either, and in fact many put in work all day, everyday. You should definitely take the time to explore the archives once you're redirected to those sites. With all that said, I challenge you to find something mundane or uninspired in this list:

Analysis
The TR808 Is Coming ... (breaks for days and beats for weeks)
The Children's Crusade (A People's History Of Hip Hop)
Zungazung Revelations (wayneandwax)
A Quick note about the Gucci List (We eat so many shrimp)
Underrated/ Underhated #6 - Black Moon/ Big Daddy Kane (Fat Lace Magazine)
We'll Always Love Big Poppa (Combat Jack With Today's Mathematics)
A Labyrinth, A Maze (Cocaine Blunts)
Forgotten LI, Pt 2: True Mathematics' "For The Money" (Jesse Serwer)
Snowed In With Lyte Week 1-7 (Werner Von Wallenrod)
Poison Clan Appreciation Week (Werner Von Wallenrod)
Newcleus: The Twixt Generation (Werner Von Wallenrod)
Demastas - Feel No Guilt b/w Sunshine (WYDU)

Homemade Compilations
Back To '89 (Cold Rock Da Spot)

Unearthed Rarities (Demos, Unreleased, Freestyles, etc)

And if you feel you wrote something that deserves to be on this list, let me know.

8-Off The Assassin (Agallah)

He was formerly known as 8-Off The Assassin, but changed the name because it was controversial; 8-Off is a variation of the name Adolf, as in Adolf Hitler. 8-Off was first recognized by Matty C as he featured him in the unsigned hype section of The Source. He would later sign to YZ's 720 Management label. He was heard for the first time on a Stretch & Bobbito freestyle session in 1992. A year later, he would make his first appearance on wax on the chorus of "Acid Rain" off YZ's second album. He showed his first production skills on "Do U Know My Style" off Champ MC's first album in 1994. After producing & hanging out with Onyx, 8-Off started working on solo work. He released his first 12" "Ghetto Girl" and his second 12" "Alize For Dolo" Feat. Mr Cheeks. He shot two videos for both tracks. Unfortunately, his album never saw the light of the day as the label folded. Only a few promo copies were handed out... Below, you will find everything leading from his unsigned hype appearance to the vls of "Alize For Dolo (Remix)" and the two videos as well as rarities. Today, Agallah is part of the Purple City Byrdgangs affiliated with Dipset.

Blog Building: Spring Break Edition

Crazy whip appeal

The upcoming week is going to be a little slow around here. Don't worry, we won't disappear altogether. We're just slowing our pace to one post per day. We need some time to regroup, refocus, brainstorm, and develop content.

This doesn't mean the T.R.O.Y. Movement won't be in effect either. Skypager, our mailing list/group is still in effect, so please sign up. Last week the Skypager crowd was blessed with a bunch of exclusive downloads, so if you don't want to be left in the cold, sign up already!

The results are in from last week's poll, and it appears that the masses prefer Champion hoodies over other 90s fashions. This week's poll is about old school acts that still tour, so go check it out in the right sidebar.

Don't forget that April is Gang Starr Month! Oh, and there's a massive rumor going around that the Philaflava Forums are about to give birth to a new blog called Steady Bloggin' that will cover contemporary hip hop. We hear that it will be up and running in the very near future so don't snooze.

Take this week to explore the posts you missed or never fully soaked in. We'll be back and fully operational come April, better than ever.

Rev Run presents Sin Assasinz (1995)

In 1995, Rev Run released his self-produced gospel project "Rev Run Presents Zoe Bros, Soul Tempo, Sin Assasinz". Being the first and only release on Rev Run Records, the album did not do well sales wise. According to Soundscan, it only sold 2,000 copies. Many fans taught that Run was doing this as a publicity stunt, they didn't follow up on the release.

The hip-hop group Sin Assasinz, rnb/hip-hop group the Zoe Brothers and an a cappella quartet called Soul Tempo were all involved in the project and they each have three solo tracks. I believe that the only group worth checking on this ep is Sin Assasinz. All of their tracks are always on point. The production they received from Run was incredible, JMJ even co-produced on one of the songs.

People are sleeping on this...

"On a recent Sunday, the Bishop had just finished his sermon when Alberto Aponte and Kenneth Cook took the stage before an unlikely gathering of silver-haired matrons and street-toughened youths. Wearing hip-hop gear and pressing microphones to their lips, the 18-year-old rappers from the Bronx began strutting beside the altar with all the macho bravado that fans of rap music have come to expect.

But instead of spewing out the misogynistic and boastfully violent lyrics that send politicians and religious leaders into a tizzy, Sin Assasinz, as they call themselves, rapped about Jesus, heaven and forgiveness." Andrew Jacobs
