Half A Mill - The Project Prophet (R.I.P.)

DJ Mike Nice recently uncovered this 1995 demo and brought it to the T.R.O.Y. forum fam.
Even if you have it already, download it again. I slowed it down a bit. For some reason, certain cassettes recorded at a slower rate which made the music sound a little faster than it was intended to sound.
Take a quick listen and start to understand what makes Half A Mil's mid 90's material so coveted-
Half A Mil - In The Projects (1995 demo)
[Download here or at the bottom of the page with everything in one folder.]

I remember having that and a few other Half A Mill demos from college radio, back in the day. I had a few of his legendary freestyles, too, but my WNYU tapes were always full of static because of their weak radio signal. I used to have the ill hook up for taping from 89.1. Hanger attached to the antenna with aluminum foil, and I had to hold the radio and point the antenna a certain way to get halfways decent reception. And still, right when you think you got it perfect, you hear some static start to creep in. And you either hope it doesn't get worse or start moving around just a little, hoping to get some clarity.
Anyway, I've probably listened to this demo over 30 times since Mike uploaded it. Shit is amazing. Lines like these put Half in the upper echolons of underground legends with the likes of the Natural Elements and Godfather Don:
"I'm from the projects, the pyramids
each room is a tomb, crack babies and boom,
we call jakes Legion of Doom, executioners, sorcerors,
modern day extortioners, they job is enforcing us..."

Moving right along, we're going to bring you a folder of freestyles, the Project Prophet mixtape, another unknown track and Half A Mill's self produced independent 12" release.

Half A Mill Productions 12" Vinyl Single
A1 - Any Day Can Be Ya Last (Vocal)
B1 - Any Day Can Be Ya Last (Instrumental)
B2 - Homicide Scene (Instrumental)

The Project Prophet Mixtape

And here's another Half A Mill track that I caught over at HipHopGiant.blogspot.com. It says that it's off of a bootleg EP. It's listed as Executioner's Song and the quality was really bassed out, where you couldn't make out the lyrics too well. I did my best to fix it up and make the lyrics audible. I have no clue when this song is from. A ballpark guess would be that this was recorded sometime between 1995 and 1998.

Half A Mill - Executioner's Song
[Download here or at bottom of page with everything in one folder]

Now, we're going to move right on into the radio freestyles that also helped secure Half A Mill's place in my personal underground legend hall of fame.In all, we have 12 separate freestyles. The first five were uploaded straight from WNYU cassettes by Nes over at DirtyWaters. There are some classic verses on these, don't sleep. There is also a freestyle that was separated from the Roots 30 minute session at WNYU, that was posted here. There's one from a DJ Lazy K mixtape from 1998, called Justo Allstars freestyle. There's also one that's apparently from an old Stretch& Bobbito show and one that I have no idea of it's origins. And another 3 with
with Nature, courtesy of Hustle The Block.

Half A Mill WNYU Freestyle 1996

Personally, I wasn't too pleased with his two albums, but alot of people were. I thought they were really lacking on the beat tip. His label didn't do him justice either, hardly anybody even knew the albums dropped when they did. Check one of them out at Steady Bloggin'.
For the record, if you didn't know, Half A Mill was found shot to death in his apartment in 2003.
RIP

The back up link doesn't have those 3 freestyles with Nature in it.

Thanks to dirtywaters, boogzthedon, itzmurda, Hip Hop Giant, Hustle The Block,
Dj Mike Nice, and K-Funkadelic.
Let's hope DJ Scratch properly releases that Half A Mill demo tape, already.

Edo G Megamix (1991-2004)

Here's a little gem that was recently posted in TROY by forum member (and part of Low Budget Music) Debonair P: a non-stop Edo G megamix highlighting the legendary Bostonians' recorded career from 1991 to 2004.

I've always thought Edo G a certifiable but overlooked legend of the Golden Age. He's got some near-classic albums under his belt, and is still making consistently good records even if the company with which he chooses to record is lackluster (read: Slaine).

This mix is real clean and right to the point. Debonair_P forgoes the wikki-wikki turntable gymnastics, instead choosing to simply focus on the music, and the result is dope. Essential for any Edo fan and a perfect jump-off point for new listeners who may have never heard him before, or simply don't know how deep his catalogue runs.

70 tracks of certified knuckle-headed East Coast madness.

Hydra Beats - The Godfather Don Collection

Godfather Don was one of my favorite emcees AND producers of the 90's. He definitely had his signature sound down pat. Sleighbells here and there, smooth, sometimes evil, jazz xylophone bell type samples, and ill as fuck horn riffs. To me, Ultramagnetic's Four Horsemen album is where he really started to make his mark and master his style.
In the mid 90's, every once in awhile, I would see these "Hydra Beats" records on the shelf.
Whenever I would see a Godfather Don one, I would scoop that joint right on up. I still never had them all and never would until these days of the internet. At least mp3 wise, but it's the music that matters.
So, today, we're gonna bring you the entire Godfather Don Hydra Beat collection.
Get to downloading and get you're CD burners ready for this one. You'll definitely want to knock these out the jeep, especially at night.

Editor's Note: Hydra released another Godfather Don instrumental album in 2004, but I didn't include it here because it doesn't really fit in with the sound on these. Also, by Part 4 of this collection, you'll notice his change of approach to beatmaking and the drop off in that real Don signature formula [in my opinion], but there's still a few bangers on there.

Hydra Beats Vol. 3 - Godfather Don Part 1

1. Buster
2. Depressed
3. Creepin
4. Gastric Juices
5. To The Bank
6. She's Gone

Volume 8 of the Hydra Beats series was a double album with each of the following producers having a side to themselves: Godfather Don, Ghetto Professionals, The Beatnuts, and Sean C. Here are only the GFD tracks-

Check kimani's blog for the Hydra Beats not included here and more Don material here.
Scoop up other Don stuff that we posted here.
Thanks to dirt_dog for the cover art, which I forgot in the download, so download it from this page.
If you haven't peeped the interview with Mike Heron(producer and A&R at Hydra), do that here. Some funny shit.
And stay tuned for some more Don treats.
We got something in the works you will appreciate.

Danger Mouse - DM Mix (98-01)

Before Gnarls Barkley, Danger Doom, The Grey Album, & bringing back Jemini The Gifted One, Danger Mouse was putting out his own hip-hop mixtapes which always included a handful of his early mash-ups or should I say blends. He released four promo mixtapes from 1998 to 2000. I hooked up all his remixes together into one folder full of Danger Mouse Remixes*. They were all well done. A blend that I really enjoy is Inspectah Deck's "Rec Room" vocals over Demastas "Feel No Guilt" instrumental. While a lot of the instrumentals used for the remixes were known to my ears, my three favorites which I included below didn't ring a bell. I think they were probably his own beats. All of you should enjoy these remixes, peep the samples below to give you a nice idea of the concept. Enjoy,

*One of the remix I included is from 2001 (wasn't on his promo mixtapes)

100X Posse - Rare & Unreleased (1992 - 1996)

If you missed our in depth interview and the uploads we posted here last November, get re-acquainted by clicking here. This is a continuous mix CD, but you can skip through tracks and it isn't offensive on the ears at all. It's actually pretty well mixed by DJ Nickybutters (aka Bang Bang Poet 24/7). There are some straight underground Philly bangers on here and the ones labeled "Commercial" are actually dope little radio promos.
You can see all who appear on this on the track list below-

1. Intro (Sihn, Nickybutters)
2. Beyond The Door (Alternate Street Version) (Mal Blak, Lex Ruger, Mustafo)
3. Redeyez Remix (Mal Blak)
4. Commercial #1 (Mal Blak, Lex Ruger)
5. Whom Shall I Fear? (Original) (Bad Newz, Mal Blak)
6. 215 (Lamar Supreme, Mal Blak, Black Thought, Lex Ruger)
7. Death To The Radio (Lamar Supreme, Mustafo, Bad Newz)
8. War Against The Surface (Mal Blak, Mustafo)
9. Underground Walls (Lex Ruger)
10. Flowers In The Attic (Bad Newz)
11. Waterfall Of Fire (Lamar Supreme)
12. Commercial #2 (Black The Rippa, Mustafo)
13. Deadly Cemetery (Mustafo)
14. Philly Niggas International (Black Thought, Malik B, Mustafo, Bad Newz, Lex Ruger, Lamar Supreme)
15. New Day, New Flow (Lamar Supreme, G-Masica)
16. Pass The Buck (Mal Blak)
17. Commercial #3 (Mal Blak)
18. They Call Me Lex Ruger (Lex Ruger)

20. Universal Soldier (Lamar Supreme)
21. The Pain (Lex Ruger, Mal Blak, Mustafo)
22. Beyond The Door (Radio Version) (Bad Newz, Lamar Supreme)
23. Acid Rain (Lamar Supreme)
24. Who Fucked Up The Pack Money? (Mustafo, Are Em, Lex Ruger)
25. Outro (Sihn, Mustafo)

Usually we would just give you the free download of something like this, but not this time, sorry. This is still available for purchase through online stores or from the label, click here. And these are guys that never got their due and deserve the measly 15 bucks for a dope CD like this.
But we will, of course, give you some ill previews-

Mal Blak, Mustafo - War Against The Surface

Lamar Supreme - Universal Soldier

And, once again I'd like to take this time to alert our T.R.O.Y. readers who still haven't taken the step, to
consider joining our Google group, Skypager. You can join by clicking here, or by finding that Skypager on the right hand side of this screen and entering your info.

Recap (2nd 1/2 of July)

We wouldn't be here today if our lesser competitors didn't consistently fall the fuck off to their own dismay

It may be the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer, but T.R.O.Y. is churning out the ill shit day after day. Some people have come to know us as the #1 spot for the rarities of known artists. You know, the place to visit if you're missing some De La b-sides or Nas remixes. While that may be true to an extent, we also dig deep into the discographies of our less celebrated rhyming heroes. Check out these posts from the last two weeks alone:

Is there another blog out there covering the golden age this thoroughly? Of course not. Thanks for following, we've got more in store!

Latee Compilation

Latee is the most gifted MC to ever come out of the Flavor Unit, but unfortunately, he never released a full-length LP. In late 2008, a Latee demo tape surfaced on ebay, and it ended up selling for $100. Needless to say, after hearing the mp3 snippets, the demos shot up to the very top of my want list. Make sure to check the divshare audio samples for the "$100 Auction Demo Tape" mp3.

I originally put this compilation together about a year ago, but since then, I added a Tim Westwood freestyle that was recently uploaded by one of our many great posters in the TROY Forum (click the link for the precise thread, props to thewool). I also discovered that there was an alternate version of "Latee Rocks Da Bells", and of course, I added the $100 demo snippets. If you have anything to add, please hit us up in the comments section.

Enjoy.

Who Flipped It Better? Moaning Samples

As a throwback to the first volume of The Moaning series, we're bringing you a dope sample used on one of the top cuts on that mix. Props to these guys for posting the sample I had been looking for. We hope to bring you more volumes in the moaning series soon, but we got lots of treats on the way. So, let's keep this moving and tell a friend to tell a friend that T.R.O.Y. got that good dope.

Norman Connors - Butterfly Dreams

Ahhh, now that's some nice, laid back, waking up on a sunny spring day with a goddess by your side, type hit. Norman Connors is good for that sailing on a yacht feeling music. Shit, he's even pictured on a boat on at least one of his album covers. The intro, before the sample in question, sounds like a great little piece to freak, too. I wonder if it's been used?
Support the artist here. I would suggest any of his albums from the mid to late seventies, of course.

Example - Slow Motion

This is probably my favorite one. I have no idea who produced it, but the entire EP that this came from is dope. This is different from the other ones in that they sped the loop up and got some nice sounds, besides the moaning, out of it. This guy, Example, was out of Houston, and this EP was the only music I ever heard from him.

Akbar - Mothaship

Yeah, this is another nice one. DJ Shame, of Vinyl Reanimators fame, laced this one up lovely. Akbar tells a story about seeing a U.F.O. that turns out to be the Mothership arriving to take him back. I think. It's a good track, peep it for yourself.

Blaque Spurm - Nonoxynol Rhymin'

Okay, well, the name of the group wouldn't be as suspect if they didn't actually have a song called,"Pack Ya Shit". Whoa, jack. Anyways, if you can get past all of that, this is a pretty dope crew and a decent working of the same sample. They get extra points for the low budget sound and the addition of this sample-

David Porter - The Masquerade Is Over (this one can have it's own sample blog)

Personally, I rate these in the order that I posted them in.
#1 = Example
#2 = Akbar
#3 = Blaque Spurm

Let us know who you think flipped it best in the comments.

Wu-Tang Clan “After The Laughter Comes The Tears (Bootleg VLS)”

I swear, I'd do just about anything for the Wu to have this raw, hungry sound again. Don't even get me started on the most recent album, which is heads above the last few. But really, how can you call it a Wu-Tang album when it doesn't have any verses from GZA, Method Man, Masta Killa or even a spot from Cappadonna?

Anyways, I picked up this vinyl back in 1996, one of my first online purchases ever (from what used to be CD Europe.) Back then everything was straight text in a list form, so I had no idea what I'd receive. But the moment I put it on I knew there was something different about this track from my cd version. It took me several years to figure out that this is bootleg of a white label of the original vinyl that the Wu-Tang sold out of the trunk of their cars (so the story goes). That makes this track the demo version of "Tearz."

02 After The Laughter Comes The Tears (Instrumental)
03 After The Laughter Comes The Tears (Bonus Beat)

Dana Dane - Rollin' Wit Dane (Remix) VLS 1995

In 1995, 'Cinderfella' Dana Dane released his last album to date "Rollin' Wit' Dane". It was mostly produced by LA's DJ Battlecat. The album had a west coast g-funk feel to it but Dana Dane still carried his 'Fort Greene Skillz'. The first 12" released for the album was called 'Record Jock'(see video here). He then followed with the self-titled album 12" 'Rollin' Wit Dane' which i'm posting today. The original version of "Rollin' Wit Dane" (produced by Battlecat) uses the "Mary Jane" sample; it also features Adina Howard with the background vocals. It's a great joint to play in the summer! I also embedded the video below the download link. The main track on the a-side is the remix though; titled "Phat & Like Dat Mix". I think that east coast heads might prefer it better than the original; a type of joint to boom it in your jeep. On the b-side along with the original & a slightly remixed version comes the "Bonus Beat Box Mix"; this is for the old school heads! A great 12" to own & add to your collection! Enjoy,

Akbar - Non-Album Tracks

Akbar is seriously one of the most slept-on MCs in the history of hip hop, and easily one of my all-time favorite Chicago MCs. My first exposure to Ak was on a DJ PNS mixtape titled Chicago Rocks Volume 2. Ever since then, I always held him in a high regard, and I was constantly on the lookout for new material. I'd eventually track down his debut 12" with the Mental Giants, but it wouldn't come cheap.

Now, you're probably saying to yourself - how in the hell does this Akbar guy have three volumes worth of non-album tracks? Fortunately, I tuned in for the DJ 3rd Rail show one Sunday night back in early 2000, and to my surprise, Akbar was in the building. He was promoting his forthcoming album "Big Bang Boogie", and since he and DJ 3rd Rail were homies, he basically did a two hour live concert on the air, and it was fucking insane. I tuned in just in time, as I was able to record the entire thing. Make sure to check the audio samples.

I also got an ill Time Travel freestyle from the homie Kevin Beacham. Check out his myspace page for the ill Chicago rarities.
