Put your hands together...

You might be scratching your head right wondering what this post is about but if you're familiar with the above clip you'll know exactly where I'm going. For a few years now The T.R.O.Y. Blog has been putting in work day in and day out. Sometimes you have to sit back and just marvel at what we've accomplishment throughout these years. You just have to.

It's true we've lost some great contributors over the years, but we've also gained some great contributors as well. See T.R.O.Y. has never been about one person, it's has always been a collaborative effort. It's important to remind you all of the work that is put in. From the ripping to the writing to the tagging to the scheduling. It's no secret we do this blog for you. So allow us to bask in our glory, to ego trip or even just be on our own dicks because pound for pound there isn't a throwback blog that is even on our level. I'm certainly not trying to paint us as the smug blog, but we're confident in the work we've done and will continue to do.

2010 started off with strong and hasn't stopped one bit. Sounds Like The 90s will resume in March, the Producer Spotlights and Touring The States both will be in full E.F.F.E.C.T. too. Our brother from another blogger, Thun Diddy will be debuting his new blog Actual Facts very soon as well.

As you can see we're expanding and tackling new eras, new subjects and trying our best to hit you from every Kurt Angle. But for now, sit back, relax, maybe catch up on some our of latest pieces and get ready for us to do our thug thizzle in 2010. Thank you for your continued support, your motivation, praise, hate and most importantly your time.

Sincerely,

The T.R.O.Y. Blog Squad

Constant Deviants/Global Platoon/Sparrow: 90's Vaults Excavated

You already know how much unreleased 90's material has been put out on vinyl in the last couple of years. Some great stuff, some just okay. Some worth the big price tags, some not really. Well, this isn't gonna be on that $80 record steez. It will be affordable, but more importantly, dope 90's hip hop music.

Six 2 Six Shift Records' planned releases:

Constant Deviants - Feel That b/w Problem Child(also remix and instrumentals) 12"
Sparrow - Flows Of Death b/w Armageddon 12" (see cover art above, dope)
2 previously unreleased Constant Deviants LPs
1 previously unreleased Global Platoon LP
2 Previously unreleased Sparrow LPs

All from between 1994 and 1999. They really can't go wrong here.

If you aren't familiar with these artists, we have plenty of mp3s to get you acquainted here.
Constant Deviants is M.I. on the rhymes and DJ Cutt on the beats.
Global Platoon is M.I., Rome, Bosch, Fla Fla(of Sparrow), Illogic, and Supreme on the rhymes and boards.
Sparrow is Fla Fla rhyming and Dre(not the doc) on the beats.
Launchpad Records was founded by DJ Rockit.

Here's some previews to help get you up to date:

Constant Deviants - Problem Child (unreleased, will be on 12")

Constant Deviants - Competition Catch Speed Knots (released in 1996 on 12")

Sparrow - Flows Of Death (unreleased, will be on 12")

Sparrow - Physics (released in 1995 on 12")

Global Platoon - Maitreya (unreleased, will be on LP)

Global Platoon - War (unreleased, may be on LP)

Global Platoon - Keep Your Day Job (released in 1997 on 12")

Bosch - Little Man (unreleased demo, may be on LP)

Bosch - Rizing Suns (released in 1997 on 12")

Rome - Dai In Life (released in 1997 on EP)

Here's 2 videos they recently dug out the vaults:

And one last summer time banger that will be the B-Side of the Problem Child 12":

"Feel That" and "Problem Child" were first played as demos on the Stretch and Bobbito show. If you're feeling any of this and want to see a proper release, either follow their blog here and leave some comments, or join their facebook vinyl petition group. Make sure you let them know that you want to see these and all the other treats they're holding onto, on vinyl or CD. These guys deserve some support in getting this stuff released. There's plenty more heaters, I just tried to pick 10 of my favs here and it wasn't easy.
There is dope new material in the works that we will try to keep you abreast with.

Mapping Out The Stretch And Bobbito Show (Demos: Juggaknots, Kool Keith, etc..)

We've finally decided to give this a go. It will be tough, no doubt. But if everybody who has any little bit of knowledge at all about the WKCR legacy, would add on and build with us, it is possible that we can map out the show's entire history.
We've got people who are willing to rip your tapes to mp3 and mail them back to you. The Big Sleep has set up a "Stretch And Bobbito" blog to archive and keep the list of shows, dates, and guests, all together in one place.

Here's a few treats that have surfaced since we started this mission:

Juggaknots - Genuine (demo?)

MF Doom - Gas Drawls (demo)

Rampage - Mad Niggas (demo)

LL Cool J - ?? Unreleased Unknown demo

Organized Konfusion - Why (OG Buckwild demo version)

Showtime - I Walk The Line (demo)

Aiello Wilson - 80 Proof (demo)

Kool Keith - Time Is Now (unreleased demo)[best quality on the internet]

Nas - The Life We Chose (DJ Eli Remix)

This is only a sampler of all the freshness that has surfaced so far.

Peace and thanks to everyone who has helped contribute so far, I hope I'm not forgetting anyone. Leave a comment if I forgot you:
The Big Sleep, aleph, Digital Stimulation, Andyman187, dj step one, RELM, jamo609, Howfresh, dirtywaters, serch4beatz, recogthereal, boogs, sen, sloppyseconds, Skeptic, Ho1ogramz, djkingflow, Dat_Triflin_Ass_Dude, megafresh, dubs, tuttsifruttsi, Kwestionmark, pradadon, Duddy, Roy Johnson

Most of those links are to really good cassette rip blogs you might want to check out.

Peace to Stretch and Bobbito.
Stretch may be coming through with a full, almost completely accurate, list of all the show dates and guests, soon. Hopefully some show rips, too. Stay tuned.

A Small Medium At Large

We speak of rap's yesteryear to marvel over the beats, perhaps even the slang, the gear, the personalities, all style variants. We presume the history of the rap genre to be mostly a mysterious series of stylistic collisions. Styles come and go and randomly dissipate into the ether, like that. We forget that the grandmasters have armies, that style is not simply unfettered intuitive poetic rumbling but also theory, conjecture, high concept, in short, propaganda. The idea is usually barebones "THISISME," or "THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT!" or some such similar epiphanic nonsense made important by a puffed chest, an ice grille, an emphatic, insistent tone.

Rap insists on moving forward, on burning every opponent or elder statesman, causing much damage to any system it encounters. We stole this lexicon from graffiti, of course, and out of this militant terminology the most desparate, egoistic, and noble endeavors were launched. Neo-Quasi-Egyptian Cosmic Race Baiting, Jheri-Curled Pseudo-Outlaw Agitprop, Sewerbound Cartoonish Babble - whatever the movement du jour, all victories were in the abstract. The imagined gladiatorial confrontations were simply vehicles for broadcasting ideas, scattering seeds, proclaiming "I a somebody" and carving that message in the clouds or shooting it to the moon.

It gradually became very important thing in the collective imagination to be a Johnny Appleseed of some such rap coalition or style or trend. The roughly hewn primary documents - the lyrics, the smashed together samples, the static, the sirens became less noteworthy than the assertions of the propagandists. Rap, as a cultural phenomenon, inexplicably shifted its focus from the poet who stares down shards of glass and sees transcendent hope to the self-styled journalist propping himself for stumbling upon said poet during his formative idealistic years. Find lightening in a bottle, then dig a hole to pass it on to China, making sure the brand of the smuggler is uttered in the same breath as the brand of the originator. Hustle.

Which is all well and good, because after the blackout of '77 birthed a million DJs, each advance in listening technology was sure to produce self-proclaimed tastemakers, the too-powerful and often small-minded "heads" that Chuck D. warned us about in his autobiography. Anyone with a blog (or an iPod, for that matter) is descendent of this phenomenon. That everyone is now a critic with the potential to amplify their critiques no matter how kneejerk is not an inherently bad thing. This genre was always a hugely critical, discursive one, and its culture of critique became only more cutthroat and intense with every technological advent.

It was probably inevitable that the armchair rap critic snatched power and voice back from the published 'zines, who had failed for the most part to sustain a generative and nuanced discussion of the art. Day in and day out the blogosphere does that the printed giants cannot - inject insight, dissent, sobriety, contemplation, nuanced critique into the discussion. Do some bloggers simply rehash the same bullshit that can be found in the increasingly emaciated print 'zines? Sure. Is our ability as bloggers/fans/heads/critics/broadcasters/propagandaists/player participators to help the cream rise to the top magnified? Y equals self, indeed. The proof is in the pudding - when the print 'zine cannot even offer a remotely credible assessment of the blogosphere, the game has not only changed in nature, but in venue, reach, and every other way. T.R.O.Y. isn't on XXL's rap blog radar but judging by how slim slim slimmy the rag is looking these days, we'd rather be out in St. Elsewhere, right?

Just last month T.R.O.Y. celebrated is first year anniversary. It might not seem very long ago, but I assure you everyday for the last 13 months we've been putting in work in hopes you come back to us. From our interviews, to our thought-provoking analysis, comprehensive lists, to our endless amounts of compilations covering samples, b-sides, remixes or complete discographies--we're out for the gusto!

We've managed to bring you guest blogging from the likes of Kurious Jorge, JVC Force, B-Real, Chip Fu, Tame One, and L.G. among others. Our main aim has always been to celebrate the music with our readers. To discover, relive or retrieve music we all appreciate. While hip-hop might be a dying art, or your favorite magazine publications cease to exist or shows like The Box, Pump It Up and Yo! MTV Rap are long gone, T.R.O.Y. will be here.

We realize the hip-hop we all know and love might not exist in the real world anymore, but it will always exists here. Every single day until the T.R.O.Y. casket drops we're going to make sure you have a place to reminisce. Whether we're challenging Dante Ross or campaigning for Easy Mo Bee, T.R.O.Y. will be here. Whether we're compiling our lists, conducting interviews with Prodigy, Guru or Henry Chalfant, T.R.O.Y. will be here. T.R.O.Y. will be here because Paul C. still matters. Because Big L will not be forgotten. Because we should know where the music originates from. Because it's important we don't forget our roots in this rap game. It's rewarding to get props from Prince Paul, Stretch Armstrong, Dres or when Vibe Magazine recognized us as the#20 best rap blog, but what's more rewarding is that you all take away something when you visit us. Hey, at least Quincy got it right!

An Open Letter To Chris Winston Regarding Nas "Deja Vu"

Chris Winston,

It has come to my attention via The Bridge '94 blog that you are the producer of the classic unreleased Nas song "Dejavu." It may seem odd to label an unreleased track as a classic but over the years, "Deja Vu" has earned this status. Despite the fact that only relatively lo-fi, unmastered versions have made it to listener's ears, it is apparent to any rap fan that the song is a bonafide gem. Nas' masterful lyrics combined with your perfectly suited sounds like heaven with a few hisses, so a higher quality version might well be the holy grail for us aging hip hop heads. I speak for the vast majority of our 1,100 subscribers (and thousands of other followers and assorted visitors) in saying that I've been fiending for a CD-quality version of this song for what seems like centuries.

It is unfortunate that shady business kept this song from seeing the light of day on a proper release. I understand that this experience must have been hugely frustrating. I also see how it could lead you to believe that there is little interest in the song itself. On this point I beg to differ. Nas' unreleased and rarities catalogue is deep and has been extensively covered on the internet. There was even a popular blog devoted entirely to such songs. Time and time again, "Deja Vu" is mentioned as one of the shining stars of this unreleased catalog, the rough draft of what should have been a perfect album cut on It Was Written. Not only does the song include the verse that later appeared on "Verbal Intercourse," it contains a second verse which is arguably even better (the "swimming pool/ sinning fool/ winning jewel" rhyme is some next shit). You produced a monumental song featuring one the genre's most beloved rappers at his peak and it deserves to be heard - crisp and clear.

Do the right thing, Chris Winston - release a CD quality version of Nas "Dejavu." Hundreds of thousands, if not millions of pairs of ears eagerly await this.

Blog Building: Check The Vibe

After all of the hoopla and brouhaha surrounding Vibe's Rap Blog list, I have to say that our mention on the list (#20, but who's counting?) has been something of an anti-climactic experience. I am certainly grateful (and the other writers* most likely agree) to be mentioned at all in a nationally circulated magazine only eight months after setting up shop on Blogger. But let's be honest - Vibe simply cannot deliver on its old strengths (scantily clad R&B starlets and industry overview, I guess) in the internet age. With the nubile Cassie buck-nekkid n' spread eagle for all to Google and dozens of blogs covering every aspect and sub-genre under the urban umbrella, where is Quincy's print 'zine's niche exactly?

If Google Analytics is to be believed, V
ibe.com's coverage of the list did not send us one single visitor. We did however receive plenty of traffic from blogs that published the list in its entirety before Vibe; it seems the blogosphere is unsurprisingly efficient at hyping itself. Thus we're not feeling too slighted by the print version of the list, which consisted of an amazingly small horizontal band of text running across several pages with no preamble. Easily missed. But as long as the readers enjoy our material and share it and keep coming back, and other bloggers link to us, we'll be alright. And that'll keep happening, in my opinion, because we do a pretty decent job of making old music seem fresh. So if anyone is reading this because Vibe's mention inspired them to point their browser at us, we're glad you found us against all odds.

Does all of this blogging about blogging have fuck all to do with
Dred Scott, you ask? Well no, not really, but that's a great song and a very 90s (in that quasi-bohemian Starbucks Lisa Bonet D.A.I.S.Y. Age meets Bupward mobility kind of way) video that should resonate well on a lazy Sunday evening before the rat race restarts. It's the kind of song that certain knee-jerk reactionary critics will write off as corny or naive or simply not produced by Peat Rawk (but I'll address all that later) but take a 90s minute (no checking the iPhone) to actually listen to it and you'll probably hear a great drum break, a beautifully performed hook, and some thoughtful rhymes. Hardly the pinnacle of rap's greatness but not quite MC Skat Kat, either. Check it. Also, look out for our YouTube Channel, coming as soon as possible.

*Yes, T.R.O.Y. is a team blog, for those that never knew! To oversimplify: I write the lengthy analytical essays, Roy Johnson does the Non-Album track compilatons, Schenectady Fan does all of those obscure regional compilations, ThomasV digs up rare videos and promo materials, Verge is the king of sample sources, Markshot has been Touring the States, Philaflava does a little of everything, and dirt_dog is new and mysterious so I'm not sure of his niche but I'm sure he has a vision. Check the sidebar for the widget that links to our individual works - T.R.O.Y. has never made so much sense to you.

Vibe Magazine's #20 Best Rap Blog

Today has been simply fantastic. First I woke up to stolen pictures of Cassie and her amazingly perky and extremely sexy rack, then I find out that just after 539 posts (8 months) we moved up the blogger food chain.

That's right! Today the Top 50 Rap Blogs by Vibe Magazine also leaked (hits stores May 17th) and we were fortunate to grace their list at #20. A few days ago when I found out about the list I immediately started to wonder if T.R.O.Y. would even be on their radar since we're relatively new and cater to a specific readers. Plus we keep to ourselves and we kind of just do our thing with very little politicking going on. So when we found out today that we were ranked #20 out of 50 it was not only a great surprise but honor too. A few years ago Philaflava was ranked the #14 best music spot by Vibe so to receive the love once again its very flattering.

We do this blog for you! We don't get paid to do this and we definitely don't crowd our blog with those ostentatious ads. It's always about the music on here. We strive to bring you quality hip-hop day after day and we will continue to do so.

Thank you Vibe Magazine for recognizing our hard work, but more importantly thank you (the reader) for your continued support, daily motivation and acceptance in the blogosphere.

Sincerely,

Team T.R.O.Y.
