Who Flipped It Better? Hiero vs. Large Pro

When I first heard this George Duke record, I immediately recognized the sample for Hieroglyphics', "You Never Knew". Dope sample. A Plus also incorporated a Patrice Rushen singing sample and sped it up to great effect. They wound up with an energetic, fast paced, warm weather anthem that made for a dope single and great video.

The first time I heard Large Pro's, "Dancin' Girl", I recognized it as having the same sample as "You Never Knew". I had to go back and dig for the original because it's not easy trying to remember every single song you ever heard and who used what for what. Nahmean?
Anyway, I was expectedly impressed with the way LP flipped that Duke sample. He looped that shit up lovely and turned it into a mellow, lounging at the tittie club anthem.

Not much more to be said here. Two great producers, two hip hop anthems.
Both dope, but in different ways. This is another example of the talent and creativity that goes behind sampling. Another example of how everybody hears things differently and how a good ear for samples can keep things fresh.

Previews:
George Duke - Seeing You

Patrice Rushen - Didn't You Know

Large Professor - Dancin' Girl

Hieroglyphics - You Never Knew

I went ahead and included two full versions of tracks that were only snippets on the original vinyl of Tribe Vibes 3 because they are just that dope- Joe Farrell's "Upon This Rock"(which was sampled by Wu Tang for something in this century that I just can't remember right now and the drums were used by all these people and more) and Cannonball Adderley's "Walk Tall".

Of course there are mad tracks on here that have been sampled by many other people since, as on all Tribe Vibes. The first cut, "Star Of The Story", is an Rn'B joint that you either hate or love. I'll admit that it's pretty cheesy, but I like it, who cares. It was also used for that Smif N Wessun white label, "Nothing Move But The Money", which you can download here.
There's just a ton of great music on here. I'm not gonna waste any more of your time trying to make a case for it. It's Tribe Vibes. You know what it is. Enjoy.

If You Missed The First Two Volumes:

And stay tuned for Volume 4.

As is par for Strictly Breaks' Tribe Vibes series, you're getting a massive amount of funk, soul, and jazz here on Volume 2. From 'Nappy Dugout' to 'North Carolina' to 'Just Enough Room For Storage', your appetite for greezy, gutbucket type funk will be straight. On the soul and RnB tip, 'Pity For The Lonely', early 80's sounding 'Beddie Bye', and the sampled a thousand times over 'Inside My Love' should keep your lady in the mood to deal with your punk ass. Closing this volume out is a spiritual jazz track called 'Soft Spirit'. You'll hear the sample for 'The Hop' in the intro, but it veers off into a deep reservoir of space jazz from that point on.

Even if you had these, you still may want them again being that we including an extra here and there that weren't on the original vinyls.

Catch Volume One here.
Volumes 3 and 4 coming soon, stay tuned...

I was originally going to give yall two volumes of these Tribe Vibes at a time, but they're just too damn great. I don't want them to get lost in the infinite sauce of T.R.O.Y. downloads that are clogging up your hd's. These really deserve thorough listens, especially this one. Just picking out samples that other people used since is enough to keep you busy for a while. And if you need an intro into funk laced soul and jazz music, this is a great start.

If you're not familiar with Jagger The Dagger by Eugene McDaniels, you'll immediately recognize it as being sampled a number of times for some other pretty notable rap joints. I bugged when I first heard this song and it remains one of my favorite funk tracks of all time. The shit is just straight rugged and evil sounding. Like many other originals, I heard this one after hearing the hip hop usage and couldn't believe just how great it was. Which leads me to this -

What gets you more hype when hearing samples?
Actually knowing what was sampled as soon as you hear the hip hop track?
Or finding the sample after hearing the hip hop track?

For me, it's probably a little bit of both. On one hand, I feel like I know my shit when I know the original first. But sometimes it takes away from the freshness if you already heard the sample. There's even times I feel that the original was so good it shouldn't have been touched at all.
On the other side, there's a certain rush I get when I stumble on an ill sample that I never knew about. Especially if it's off a real tough record or somewhere nobody would have thought it was on.
If you have a preference, hit up the comments.

Thanks to HHIR for the full versions of Absolutions, Outside Love, and Ekim.

Valentine's Stimulus (90s RnB)

Face the facts, fam, this year's Valentine's Weekend activities are going to be decidedly low-key. You may love wifey to the fullest extent but the current state of the economy demands some belt tightening, some practical judgement. In prior years a lavish night on the town and luxurious gifts were par for the course, but 2009 will see a record number of couples keeping the festivities in the crib. Resourcefulness will be key.

There's no doubt in my mind that half of you procrastinated anyway. But fear not, T.R.O.Y. got your back at the last minute. After curling up on the loveseat with your queen and peeping "Love & Basketball" on your Netflix Instant Queue, you're going to need music to set the tone for the remainder of the evening. Verge already brought you a Valentine's specific compilation of old school funk drops for such a purpose. Now I present the 90s RnB answer to your romantic/economic woes: The Valentine's Stimulus.

With this compilation pulsating through the hi-fi and reverberating through the low-lit living room, you're golden. Pour out the Moet, turn up the gas fireplace and get to whispering those sweet nasty nothings. The mix starts out super mellow melodic and ends on a faster paced note just in time for the proceeding to take a turn for the athletic. Thank us later.

Shout outs to Dolph Lunggren, Gyangsta 4 Life, and Bongloid for their contributions.

Adriana Evans ft. Phife "Never Say Goodbye"
Faith Evans "You Used To Love Me" (Ummah Mix)

Valentine's Weekend "Funk Drops" Compilation

I'm not the biggest fan of this holiday, but everyone needs a good funk and soul mix on hand for the ladies. Of course, love is the theme here. It's just not exactly your average radio disc jockey ballad garbage that's on your local station right now.

We start this love-a-thon off on the deep funk soul tip with cuts from The Counts, Eugene McDaniels, and 100% Pure Poison. After a funk instrumental by the Propositions, we ease right on into the sweet soul cut from The Sylvers, "Only One Can Win"[famously sampled by the late great J Dilla].

It's just one infectious groove after another that will stay playing in your brain for some time to come. There's samples all over the place. From MF Doom to Jemini the Gifted One. From Da King & I to Common. This compilation ends appropriately with Melvin Van Peebles' very real and pretty damn funny track called "I Remember".

01. The Counts - Why Not Start All Over Again
02. Free Soul - Give Me Back My Freedom
03. Eugene McDaniels - Lovin' Man
04. O'Donel Levy - Hey,Love!

06. 100% Pure Poison - Puppet On A String
07. Propositions - You've Been Chose
08. The Sylvers - Only One Can Win
09. Edwin Birdsong - I Love You Michelle
10. Amnesty - We Have Love
11. O.V. Wright - Let's Straighten It Out
12. Syreeta - I Love Every Little Thing About You

Thirty & Good Vol. 1 (90s R&B)

Face it, man - you're not getting any younger. Seasons change; mad things rearrange. You wince when you hear the word "motherfucker" spoken in the vicinity of children or old ladies. You secretly wonder if metal things are appropriate tools for settling things. You spend more time in pursuit of commitment and equity than blunts and forties. You keep your eyes open for sales on porkpie hats and fancy socks, you relish your after-dinner cognac, and you're saving up the loot to take wifey on a surprise getaway to a cozily romantic B&B for some well-deserved R&R. But for that you'll need some R&B.

Fortunately for you, while you frittered away your youth by obsessing over authenticity, R&B artists continued to collaborate with hip hop producers and rappers to make joints and jams that your older self would eventually grow to appreciate. Tekitha's rousing "Walking Through The Darkness" was later reincarnated as a Ghostface song that banished her to the hook but you need this original version in your life. Joi's first single "Sunshine & Rain" is brooding yet sultry, somber and yet impassioned like all memorable soul music. Leschea's "3 to 5" flips a Wu-Tang classic justly, while D'Angelo sounds right at home crooning alongside AZ's refined flows over a punchy head-nodder of a beat.

The usually saccharine Boyz II Men are play their position in a cipher featuring Treach, Craig Mack, and Busta, reminding us that rap owes a debt to doo-wop. Rae and Ghost rip Jodeci's bawdy "Freekin U" like it was just another cut off the purple tape. Rae shines again on Davina's similarly styled "So Good." Jay-Z adapts himself to whatever track is thrown at him, coming off smooth but not slick on remixes of The Braxtons "So Many Ways" and SWV's "You're The One." Yvette Michelle combines Mary J. Blige's unexpectedly sexy Noo Yawk accent and combines it with the cool yet determined sensibility of Sade on the stalkerish "Everyday Everynight." Lord Jamar and Sadat X lend their flows to a funkier version of Groove Theory's acid-jazz anthem "Tell Me," and Zhane's annoying party-starter is given a much needed harder-edged facelift.

You can't go wrong with this compilation - it works too well for mixed company and diverse occasions. Which is good because you'll probably still front about your reasons for including it in your iPod. No need for that, though, this shit bangs. Expect many, many more volumes - the thread is on and poppin' at the T.R.O.Y. Forum so add your requests and recommendations. Oh and thanks to Lyrical Gymnastics, Spartan, Drizzle, Mark 563, thebridgeisover, kevin beacham, vaporized, and Dred Scott for contributing tracks to this volume, as well as everyone else who uploaded songs and suggested titles.
