Valentine's Stimulus (90s RnB)

Face the facts, fam, this year's Valentine's Weekend activities are going to be decidedly low-key. You may love wifey to the fullest extent but the current state of the economy demands some belt tightening, some practical judgement. In prior years a lavish night on the town and luxurious gifts were par for the course, but 2009 will see a record number of couples keeping the festivities in the crib. Resourcefulness will be key.

There's no doubt in my mind that half of you procrastinated anyway. But fear not, T.R.O.Y. got your back at the last minute. After curling up on the loveseat with your queen and peeping "Love & Basketball" on your Netflix Instant Queue, you're going to need music to set the tone for the remainder of the evening. Verge already brought you a Valentine's specific compilation of old school funk drops for such a purpose. Now I present the 90s RnB answer to your romantic/economic woes: The Valentine's Stimulus.

With this compilation pulsating through the hi-fi and reverberating through the low-lit living room, you're golden. Pour out the Moet, turn up the gas fireplace and get to whispering those sweet nasty nothings. The mix starts out super mellow melodic and ends on a faster paced note just in time for the proceeding to take a turn for the athletic. Thank us later.

Shout outs to Dolph Lunggren, Gyangsta 4 Life, and Bongloid for their contributions.

Valentine's Weekend "Funk Drops" Compilation

I'm not the biggest fan of this holiday, but everyone needs a good funk and soul mix on hand for the ladies. Of course, love is the theme here. It's just not exactly your average radio disc jockey ballad garbage that's on your local station right now.

We start this love-a-thon off on the deep funk soul tip with cuts from The Counts, Eugene McDaniels, and 100% Pure Poison. After a funk instrumental by the Propositions, we ease right on into the sweet soul cut from The Sylvers, "Only One Can Win"[famously sampled by the late great J Dilla].

It's just one infectious groove after another that will stay playing in your brain for some time to come. There's samples all over the place. From MF Doom to Jemini the Gifted One. From Da King & I to Common. This compilation ends appropriately with Melvin Van Peebles' very real and pretty damn funny track called "I Remember".

01. The Counts - Why Not Start All Over Again
02. Free Soul - Give Me Back My Freedom
03. Eugene McDaniels - Lovin' Man
