Touring The States: Chicago, IL

This is just a meagre text off the M-Doc wikipedia page:

"M-Doc is a rap artist and producer who was signed to RCA Records in the 1990s. He scored minor chart success with the singles "Free" and "It's a Summer Thang" featuring Chantay Savage.
In the late 90s he produced remixes for Madonna, Janet Jackson and Keith Sweat. Billboard called him "one of the R&B worlds top remixers".

If anyone have any of his other releases and is willing to share with us, please do it, it will be mad appreciated and we will make sure you'll get your deserved props on The T.R.O.Y. Blog community.

Touring The States: Omaha, NE

The Basement Society is a collective of emcees whose Hip Hop origin is a direct result of being in "the basement." This crew was a predetermined idea of Omaha emcee, Superior DBX.
After presenting the idea to long time friend and fellow emcee, Jay Money. things started to come together. The crew consisted of DBX (RIP), N-tellect, Jay Money, Kee Lo Z and All Ayz (RIP).

The Basement took the streets by storm after running around challenging anybody who wanted to battle and smashing the competition. They became known for their live performances, which brought them household name status. The Basement's first recording was a song called "Its Over" on 1993's "Parental Advisory" (the first local project release), on which they dissed the Young Rebels, another prominant Omaha crew. After beefin' with the Young Rebels (and a few other crews), Basement Society released their debut ep "Who Downstairs?" in April of 1994, which started out on a successful path. "Who Downstairs?" was probably the most popular project released under the watchful eye of DJ Suicide, at that time, selling all copies out of the store (no hand to hand sales), relying on heavy street promotions and the impact of the live shows to sell the units.

A recording contract was being discussed with Ichiban Records back in 1995, but interference from a long time associate of Jay Money and DJ Suicide killed all negotiations. Toward the end of 1995, Basement Society returned to the studio and recorded 3 new songs for a maxi-single called "Raw Power Move." But, due to conflicts within the crew, it was never released. The Basement never broke up, but certain members went their seperate ways. In 2000, all 5 of the Basement members appeared on stage together, impromptu, of course, at the Black Sheep/Das Efx concert in Lincoln, NE. This appearance alone outshined the opening act.

Touring The States: Tulsa, OK

T-Town native, Dangerous Rob has been in the record industry for 20 years. He recorded his first rap record at the age of 15 with a group named THOB-MOB. After graduating from Edison High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1989, Dangerous Rob went to Langston University in Oklahoma. There he performed in talent shows and rap contests. In 1990 he put his educational goals aside and released his second record. Combined with Partners-N-Rhyme a local rap group, the record was distributed nationwide. It sold more than 10,000 copies of the single "Cold Chillin in the Middle". This popularity allowed him to perform with many big named artists.

In 1995 Dangerous Rob released Bakkk From the Middle which sold over 6,000 copies. "Its a T-Town thing" is a cut that best represents the positive direction that his middlism style is taking him. Middleism is a style that adds a lighter touch to gangsta rap yet still keeps the brutal honesty gangsta rap is famous for.

Touring The States: Portland, ME (with Echo Leader)

Maine is generally more known for producing lobsters and lumber than rap talent. Sure, we've got some great local MC's - Well's Spose and the mid-state duo Luch & Eliza come to mind - and a relatively well-known (at least regionally) record label called Flophouse, but past that the good rappers are few and far between, and often slip through the cracks of open mic nights and backwoods poolhall performances. It's been hard to put the Pine Tree State's hip-hop scene on the map.

Sole could have done it for us, man.

After a series of industry misadventures following the recording of his first demo - including an deal with EMI that fell through at the last second - Tim Holland (bka Sole) and his DJ Cuz Tha Highlander began recording together under the moniker "Northern Exposure." During it's brief existence, the crew only put out one album, 1994's "Madd Skills & Unpaid Bills." This cassette-only effort was put out on a now-defunct local imprint called 45 Below Records, and only sold around 300 copies. Needless to say, finding an original tape is damn near impossible.

Sadly for Northern Exposure, long-term success was not to be. Shortly after the tape's release and subsequent lack of success, Sole decided to keep it movin' and began recording with a new group, the Last Poets. Thier 1996 release "What's It All About?" quietly began making the dub rounds, eventually being traded as far as Los Angeles and arguably planting the seed for an entire future crew of milquetoast, "artsy" rappers in the Yay.

The music contained on "Madd Skills..." is certainly indicative of the time during which it was recorded. Hardcore b-boy posturing. Black Moon samples all over the place. Extensive graffiti references. Gritty boom-bap beats, courtesy of Tim & Cuz. And check out the intentional misspelling of "madd" in the title! I mean, misspelling stuff worked for Redman, right?

In conclusion, Sole's contemporary fans would positively shudder to hear these grimy examples of life on the harsh, unforgiving streets of Portland, throwing off their headphones and quivering behind their scarves. I can only imagine what would have happened if Tim/Sole had stayed in Maine and kept to the course; he might have influenced a generation or more of Jedi Mind Tricks-lite kids dressed up in wheat Timbos, baggy jeans, and North Face bubble gooses. Hoods from the woods, if you will.

In short: don't sweat moving to Cali, Tim. We've been ok.

In case you're wondering what anticon's wunderkind sounded like before he grew out his facial hair, peep game. It's actually pretty interesting to hear the approach Sole started out with, considering his current sonic pedigree. (Thanks to schenectadyfan for providing a rip of this incredibly rare tape.)

Cool Nutz is one of Portland's hip hop pioneers alongside his friend and business partner, super producer Bosko Kante. The two are founders and owners of Jus Family Records, founded in 1992. After several classic releases, Cool Nutz and Bosko have gained a cult following within the Portland hip hop scene and have been acknowledged outside of their hometown.

Cool Nutz has performed with artists such as like Ice Cube, Blackalicious, Wu-Tang Clan, Aceyalone, E-40 and many more. He also has been featured on tracks with E-40, Kurupt, Sticky Fingaz, Ras Kass, WC, Mac Dre and others.

This album was entirely produced by Bosko. The Jus Family Records site, says that the album has 11 tracks. On my version, track tags were messed up, so I corrected them. One track remaining untitled, so I'm guessing that this is a bonus track. I decided, in assistance with Verge, to title it "Neva Went Out" because it samples the B-Real line "Never went out and I don't think I'm gonna." Track is heat, like the rest of the album. Enjoy.
