Touring The States: Chicago, IL

This is just a meagre text off the M-Doc wikipedia page:

"M-Doc is a rap artist and producer who was signed to RCA Records in the 1990s. He scored minor chart success with the singles "Free" and "It's a Summer Thang" featuring Chantay Savage.
In the late 90s he produced remixes for Madonna, Janet Jackson and Keith Sweat. Billboard called him "one of the R&B worlds top remixers".

If anyone have any of his other releases and is willing to share with us, please do it, it will be mad appreciated and we will make sure you'll get your deserved props on The T.R.O.Y. Blog community.

StillTown Presents Chicago: Only Cold Winds Blow

A new memeber of Philaflava forum, StillTown, made this compilation for his own blog, but also decided to share with Philaflava community. Thank you StillTown.
Recently, we here at T.R.O.Y. supplied you with awesome summer compilations, so just in case it was too much heat for you, we thought it would be nice to cool you off a little bit with this one.

Soon after this compilation dropped, Kevin Beacham who also ran Time Travel radio program on WNUR 83.9 in Chicago, gave us information that Distortionists and Example are from Texas.
But never mind for that, cause this don't give this compilation a lower vaule.
Also thanks to Kevin Beacham for providing some of this tracks exclusively from his collection, which you can check in this thread.
Enjoy!

My Tapes by Basta aka KYOZAI Pt. 1

You might know Basta (aka Kyozai) as being the owner of the rare cassette blog, Music-Thingz. Recently, he blessed us with a nice portion of his tape collection at philaflava T.R.O.Y. forum.

Here at The T.R.O.Y. blog, we wanted to give these tapes their deserved shine and Basta the proper recognition he's earned, to the people outside of the philaflava forum.

I will split his tapes in several posts, giving you enough time to digest this massive work. There will be no previews, but c'mon, the hilariously awesome covers alone warrant a download.

Enjoy!

Midwest Starting Line

The midwest is an enigma. It's a melting pot for hip hop due in large part to its location and musical diversity. Chicago is far removed from either shore. The heartland exhibits both east and west coast influences. 'Who's Da Killa' is worlds away from 'Next Contestant' but each is unequivocally dope for their own style. Both represent the 'Windy City'. Here's volume 1 of the midwest's best, with more to come.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X7Q9LOCB

01 (2:53) Awol - Dear Abby (Detroit 1994)
02 (7:53) Tru - Who's Da Killa (Chicago 1992)
03 (5:05) Kinghood cykos - Mind Of A Cyko (Michigan 1992)
04 (5:25) Criminal Behavior - What's It Gon' Take (chicago 1993)
05 (3:57) Schoolly D - I Know You Want To Kill Me (Ya, Ya..Philadelphia 1994)
06 (3:26) Figure Uv Speech - Next Contestant (Chicago 1993)
07 (3:50) JCD And The Dawg Lb - St. Louis Niggas (1992)
08 (6:08) Ganksta Rhyme Mystro - D-E-T-R-O-I-T Don't Give A Fuck (1992)
09 (3:44) Devious Steve - I Got That Nine ( Michigan 1994)
10 (4:51) Crucial Conflict - Slow Down (Chicago 1996)
11 (4:05) EC & Rubberoom - Taste of Chicago 1997
12 (4:05) Indo-G and Lil Blunt - Trapped in the Game (St Louis 1994)
13 (6:41) Detroit's Most Wanted - All About Ya Yo (1994)

Why is Schoolly D on a midwest mix ? It fit well, and he'd pound Twista in a cage fight. That's why.

Black Mob - Street Hitz Funk

Gangsta rap from Chicago? I couldn't believe when I first heard this album that this group is coming out of Chicago. My first thoughts were that they must be from the Bay Area or some Western State. There wasn't too much info about them that I could find, except some tidbits regarding production. The back cover says this album was produced by Soundmaster T and co-produced by Delle Del. These names don't mean a lot to me, cause this is the first I have ever heard of them. But this album is tight.

Pretty much whole album is savory. Almost all of beats are smooth and pretty much listenable with one or two hard cuts. While searching through the internet I have seen many many comments giving this album "classic" title. I think "classic" is a bit of an overstatement and might reflect a bias towards gangsta rap. Obviously it would not be useful to compare the album to the styles of Common Sense, All Natural, No I.D. etc. because this is real g-shit, so you'll have to assess it in its own context on your own. So, download it, listen to it from the first to the last second, give it a rating as you see fit, but one thing is certain: this album won't sound downright wack to anyone. Let us know what you think after a solid listen. Cheers.

Black Mob - Street Hitz Funk

01. Intro
02. Comin Right At Cha
03. Sick Of This Shit
04. Interlude
05. U Lover
06. Yall Don't Know Me
07. Interlude
08. 69
09. What A Friend
10. Street Hit Funk
11. Gangster Shit
12. Interlude
13. I Don't Need A Gun
14. Sick Of This Shit Remix
15. Thank You

Resurrection 1994 (The Lost Twista Album)

Resurrection(1994) is the name of the second album from Chicago rapper Twista. Twista slowed his flow and deepened his voice on his second effort; he also took a darker, rougher production. This album was never released officially, it could only be found on the streets of Chicago. The album also shares the same title as Common's Resurrection from 1994 as well. Dres of Black Sheep can be heard sharing the mic with Twista on Track 5 "Re-Act With A Mic". The highlight track of the album is "Suicide", a diss directed at Naughty By Nature, The Beatnuts, and Del The Funky Homosapien. To those who were thinking that Twista was just a gimmick, this album clearly showed his true mc skills.

And to those wondering where I got this "re-issue", I bought it from thetipcds.com a few years ago. Unfortunately, it's no longer available. Here's the tracklist and the download link.
  1. "Da Resurrection" (Intro)
  2. "Suicide" (Remix)
  3. "Anomosity Kills"
  4. "Street Paranoia"
  5. "Re-act With a Mic" ft. Dres
  6. "Scat Like Dat"
  7. "Return"
  8. "Dirt On The Down Low"
  9. "Shadow Boxin'"
  10. "All About the Papes"
  11. "One Shot, One Kill"
  12. "Suicide" (Original Version)

DJ PNS - Chicago Rocks Vol.2

Here's is the second installment of the Chicago Rocks mixtape series mixed by DJ PNS. If you enjoyed the first mixtape, you will like this one as much as it mostly features the same artists that were on the first tape. The last part of Side B is dedicated to the Molemen Crew, the last tracks are by Vakill & Rhymefest, Lumba of Rubberoom, & Judgemental (1994 NMS Champ). This mixtape is basically a collector mainly for the last spotlight, DJ PNS going at Kanye West in 97'. Kanye West supposebly was already stealing drums from other producers when he was unknown. I believe that it must had been a track from Grav's album. Nevertheless, the"Chicago Rocks" series is known for being one of the greatest mixtape in hip-hop history so it's a must that everybody needs to peep it! Enjoy!

DJ PNS - Chicago Rocks Vol.1

In 1996, DJ PNS dropped the first of classic mixtape series "Chicago Rocks". It is known for strictly featuring Chicago emcees. The Molemen had dropped a few highly-influential mixtapes but the "Chicago Rocks" series was, without question, their finest contribution to the mixtape market. It featured Molemen affliates as usual like E.C. Illa, Vakill, Ang 13 then you have up & coming artists such as Rubberoom, Stony Island, D2 Tha Es, Fully G, Tha Chamba... It also features known names such as Common Sense, Tung Twista, No I.D. & Dug Infinite, and Crucial Conflict. Midwest Compilation

Thought I'd post some midwest material today..

The midwest pumped out a lot of bangin' hip hop in the early/mid 90's. Most of the cuts on these compilations are from cities whose scenes are familiar,. detroit, chicago, etc. Look closer and you'll see some surprises here.

Oklahoma, Nebraska, Arkanas might not be states that spring to mind offhand for hip hop at all, much less classic material that burns itself into your memory and plays in your mind days, weeks, years later. Alot of the artists featured here were overlooked. Their work wasn't widespread and their releases typify the regional abundance of the independent hip hop underground.

If I listed a state, but not the city it's because I wasnt sure. Finding info on the net for some of these groups is impossible....

Here are links and tracklists to four head-nodding volumes of some of the best the midwest has to offer---
