Is Philly the 2nd most important city to Hip-Hop?

I'm just speaking for me, not the blog but I also believe it's a very legit question too. When you put it down on paper and realize all of the Philly legends, microphone masters, turntable technicians, classics hits and summer anthems it's an argument worth making.

Obviously, NYC is number one but when you think about how Philly changed the game and continues to deliver the top talent what city/state takes its spot? L.A? Atlanta? Jersey? Houston? Detroit? Think about it...

Here are just some (not complete) of some Philly representatives.

  4. Gotta be L.A. - I bet you can make a list longer than that for Compton alone.

Plus LA made a huge impact stylistically not just with the Ganxta rap, but the tongue twisters as well.. Heiro, Hobo, Pharcyde etc.

Writers too, from ol' King Hex down to T.S.L. the West Coast style is mad wreckognizable.

I'm not puttin down Philly or the Apple, just sayin that LA's gotta be number 2 because as well as having a huge presence, they've also added the most distinct counterpoint to that original East Coast Boom bip.. aBoom bip.. Boom bip.. aBoom bibip

    Peas - Sites slammin!

  6. Long Island has to get an honorable mention Eric B & Rakim (well Rakim at least), PE, De la Soul, EPMD, Keith Murray, Leaders of The New School, Aesop, R.A., Doom (I believe)

  7. Illadelph may be third, but Los Angeles has to be second. From NWA to Freestyle Fellowship, The Game to Thavius Beck...

  8. man... I wrote tons of shit and it got lost.

    bottom line:

    Ice T's "Colors" > Oakland's Too Short > Houston's various movements > Philly.

  10. Your list left out Tuff Crew. Those guys were major to me.

I'd have to agree with some of the folks above on L.A. being number two. And not just because of that Death Row crap. There's just a seriously massive list you could put together.

I may not bump all of them, but if the criteria is "important to Hip-Hop" I don't think you can front.

(BTW @broke9207, Hiero and Hobo are from Oakland/SF Area.)
