Drayzee Says: It's 'Em Summer Days Volume 1

Recently we blessed you with G-Funk California.
If that was not much for you, than try to digest this load of dope summer tracks from all over The States, alloted in 3 volumes, made by member of philaflava forum and owner of his own blog, Drayzee, http://drayzee.blogspot.com/.
Drayzee was just kind enough to allow us to use his own work and to represent it via T.R.O.Y. Blog.
Thank you Drayzee for this massive work.

"Drayzee Says: It's 'Em Summer Days" is a compilation based on g-funk/gangsta/jazz/funk music. Too bad it's not summer yet, however this project will certainly give you that summer vibe. I hope this will bump in your speakers 6 summers from now. The first volume contains more "party-like" songs, the second volume will contain more gangsta/cruisin' stuff, jazz & funk, and the third one will be for you to just chill on. I also used some St. Ides commercial once per 8-9 songs, just to give you the feeling that there still is a dope radio on earth bumpin' this.

J-Love “Nas' Finest” (Cassette)

CLASS-SICK!

This tape is one of those gems that never gets old (even with some J-Love drops on it).
When I first got my hand on a copy of this tape, it really opened up my eyes to the possibility that a lot of artists had material that never made it on albums. And at the time, J-Love seemed to be the one with all the connections as every one of his tapes were covered in exclusives, remixes and unreleased tracks. See scans for track lists and the download contains a full scan of the j-card.

Shouts to Ricky D for sending me a shoe box full of mixtapes many years ago. I'm finally getting around to ripping them.

enjoy,

Apache - R.I.P. Jan.22.10

Paying my tribute to one of the original Flavor Unit crew member, Apache, I compiled all of his appearances on records from 1989 to 1993 and the 12" cuts from his 1993 solo album "Apache Ain't Shit". Starting out with Lakim Shabazz on 45 King's Rhythmical Madness in 1989. Following with four appearances on the Flavor Unit album in 1990. In 1991, he's on Naughty By Nature & Double J's album. In 1993, for his 12"s cuts, he receives production from A Tribe Called Quest(Q. Tip), Large Professor, and The 45 King. For his guest appearances in 1993, he's with Fat Joe & Kool G Rap, and 2Pac(R.I.P), Treach, & The Live Squad(Stretch R.I.P). He would also write some of Latifah's lyrics. Apache had an incredible music collection.

How To Rap: The Art And Science of The Hip-Hop MC

We typically don't cover books on T.R.O.Y., but this particular one stood out. The guest list is pretty impressive and I must say I'm a sucker for any rap books too. And you get a foreword by G. Rap? I'm reading that for sure! I plan on copping this but if any of you have already read How To Rap, definitely let us know what you think. --Philaflava
Out now is a book on MCing and creating Hip-Hop music told through the words of over 100 of Hip-Hop’s most acclaimed and successful artists. The book is called “How to Rap: The Art & Science of the Hip-Hop MC” and features a foreword by Kool G Rap, along with exclusive insights and guidance from the likes of Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Masta Ace, Mobb Deep, Clipse, A Tribe Called Quest, Styles P, Pharaohe Monch, Royce Da 5’9”, AZ, Boot Camp Clik, Immortal Technique, and many more.

They share the stories behind writing and recording their lyrics, as well as discussing the pros and cons of everything from writing lyrics in your head to doing punch-ins to tackling different types of subject matter.

It also includes the first complete breakdown of rap’s “flow”, allowing you to create tongue-twisting compound rhyme styles like Kool G Rap and Eminem, complex conversational flows like Nas and OC, the classic old school patterns of Melle Mel, and everything in between.

It has been called “a vital and vibrant expose of a much misunderstood art form” by Hip Hop Connection magazine, and dubcnn.com says “never before has the art form been broken down so well”.

Sounds Like The 90's (Volume 6)

I'mma try and keep this shorter than usual since I just got back from my trip. The people wanted it so you are finally getting it-TAGS!

That's right, moving forward all SLT9's will be mp3 player friendly containing the proper tags and artwork. Volume 6 definitely has a more rugged feel than the previous efforts. The first half showcases what NY's been doing for the better part of the year with the new Smif N Wessun featuring the Smith Bros.

Then we give you a taste of the new Marco Polo/Torae album Double Barrel, which I suggest you clicking on that link to preview because you just might be finding yourself at Best Buy later picking it up. I haven't finished the whole album but based off what was leaked it was reason enough for me to cop it over the weekend (@ Fat Beats too)!

Former ONYX member Sonny Seez is back with a new 28-track album and our sister blog Steady Bloggin' were kind enough to provide 8 tracks for you to check out. I felt
"Romp" was the best of the bunch and belonged on Volume 6. DJ Premier laced Blaq Poet with another joint and then we give you the latest by Chubb Rock and Wordsmith. I know the artwork reads Wordsworth and it would make sense for them to collaborate since they've done it before (Prince Paul) but this is Wordsmith. It's my fault because I told the graphic dude (Kalel) the wrong thing.

Since Pete Rock and C.L. can't put aside their differences we're putting their newest tracks back-2-back on letting you decide who needs who more. Next up we got
Superstar Quamallah making his 4th consecutive appearance with "Bass Murder" featuring Defari Heru. Don't forget to cop Quam's new album Invisible Man.

Making another consecutive appearance is the homie Godamus Rhyme with another leaked track from the T.R.O.Y. project "Classically Trained." This time God tackles The Pharcyde classic and goes 3-3 with his remakes. And since I was in such a Pharcyde kinda mood, I thought it only made sense to throw on the recently remixed O.G. version by DJ Jazzy Jeff and close out the with Jean Grae's tribute to Biggie.

Finally we have some newer tracks by
Tha Connection, Tanya Morgan and '09's version of "A Milli" by Nathaniel Wilson. I did add a bonus track since it doesn't really go with the theme but the subject matter definitely fits. Galvatron78 allows all of us Nintendo nerds to reminisce with his track "Playin Nintendo." You can find more Galvatron78 tracks by clicking here.

Well that's it from me. Hope you all enjoy the new volume and keep sending us those tracks! --Philaflava

The Redefinition Of Time Travel #2 w/ Kevin Beacham

The Redefinition Of Time Travel #2: A Kool G Rap classic

Kool G Rap “I Declare War”

By now, if you are a internet savvy ‘80s Hip Hop fiend, you are probably aware about the Juice Crew EP of unreleased gems that just dropped [all Produced By Marley Marl]. I don’t know if there is info out there on the year this was done but I’d say early ’88 based on the style, some of the references, and I’m guessing that sped up “Terrorist” scratch in the intro is from “Juice Crew All Stars” (’87).

The third verse is definitely the best and where he flexes the style that originally made him recognized as one of the greats. It’s essentially a battle rap challenging anyone in the industry with lines like, “Point out any rapper and I’ll diss em” or “I got a track for every rapper on the map”.

The line that left the biggest impression on me was his “I’m Kool G Rap, you can call me G. I’m not scared of any K, any J, or any D”. Immediately when I heard that I thought of it as a challenge to others with “Cool” names, particularly “Cool J” and “Kool D” (who had a record on Wildpitch in ’88). I haven’t been able to figure who the Kool K is…maybe Kool Keith? (I’m probably reaching there). Of course this is all speculation but it seems logical by using those particular letters that he is being specific, that could be one of the reasons why the song was never released, who knows. I put the job on some other blogger to interview Kool G Rap about that….ha

Fifty Remixes You Need To Hear (21-30)

21. Fat Joe ft. Grand Puba and Diamond D. "Watch The Sound" (Beatnuts Remix)

22. Nas "The World Is Yours" (Q-Tip Remix)

23. Ol' Dirty Bastard "Brooklyn Zoo" (Digga Remix)

A phenomenal remixed version of this ODB classic. Produced by the one and only Lord Digga. Search our archives for a 2CD set of Digga productions.

24.a Kool G. Rap ft. Nas "Fast Life" (Norfside Remix)

24.b Kool G. Rap ft. Nas "Fast Life" (Vinyl Reanimators Remix)

25. Gangstarr "Gotta Get Over" (Large Pro Remix)

On this remix, Large Professor shows us what you can accomplish with a simple yet filthy bassline. Sometimes less is more.

26. OC "Word ... Life" (DJ Celory Remix)

27. J-Live "Braggin' Writes" (Domecracker Remix)

28. Dr. Octagon "Blue Flowers" (Prince Paul Remix)

Dan The Automator's version is one of the creepiest, unsettling, beautiful rap instrumentals ever. No stranger to eccentric mind-fuckery on wax, Prince Paul manages to craft a version every bit as eerie and absurd, for the win.

29. GZA ft. Inspektah Deck and D'Angelo "Cold World" (RZA Remix)

If you're looking for a track this X-mas to help you gain weight and abuse smack like it's featured guest, then check out the Cold World remix featuring D'Angelo. His haunting crooning of the chorus gives it an even more ominous feel than the original, complimented perfectly by a few subtle tweaks in the beat by RZA.

30. Cypress Hill ft. Redman, Erick Sermon, MC Eiht "Throw Your Set In The Air" (Remix)

Songs Of Death

break out the egg nog and prepare the christmas carols, let's talk about death.
in hip hop, death is usually approached from a "i'm gonna kill you" perspective. however, there are occasions when rappers get a little deeper and look at their own mortality or the passing of a close one. so, here's a mix of songs where mc's discuss the many angles of death. i omitted the most famous songs of this genre ("crossroads". "T.R.O.Y.", "reminding me (of sef)" and "i'll be missing you") cause who really needs to be put on to those songs?

2)the wreckoning: lateef
3)love comes and goes: ed o.g. and da bulldogs

MC Shan is Livin' Large

Almost everyone from the Juice Crew switched label in the early 90's. MC Shan went to Livin' Large Records just like Roxanne Shante. He first released "Hip Hop Roughneck" with the b-side "Watchin' My Style" in 1993. I really liked the instrumental that they used for it; it's probably going to make your head nod. Next he released his second single "Penile Reunion"; a posse cut with Kool G Rap, Neek the Exotic, Diesel, and Snow. It was produced by Kool G Rap and The Large Professor. The B-side "Don't Call It a Comeback" is produced by Mister Cee and it contains scratches by DJ Scratch.

I also have the CD Single for both of these releases so it's probably the best quality you will ever get them in.

MC Shan - Penile Reunion/ Don't Call It a Comeback

Which Remix Is Better? Fast Life Edition

Kool G Rap - Fast Life(ft. Nas)
The original Buckwild version of this was a well produced radio song. But the two most known remixes really outshined it to many heads at the time.
1.Norfside Mix - Buckwild was in the midst of a prolific period in his career when he churned this one out.He managed to turn this song in the opposite direction and made it a certified street banger.
2.Vinyl Reanimators Remix - I still don't know exactly how they constructed this beat, but they kept a similar melody as the Norfside Mix and made it sinister and more rugged. They also changed up the hook with scratched in vocal samples, which is usually a plus.

The argument will still remain over which remix is the better one, voice your opinion in the comments if you have a favorite out of the two.

Download the two remixes and instrumentals, in one folder, here.

Thanks to FatFaceFreddy, Ho1ogramz, and drizzle at the Troy forum for upping these tracks and instigating this blog. --Verge

Correction: The Norfside Mix was produced by Salaam Remi, not Buckwild. --Verge

Sample Compilation 4

This time we start off with one of the greatest intros for a rap song ever."Strange Games and Things" by Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra. EPMD immortalized this song on their banger of an album,"Business As Usual". K-Def also used it effectively for the Real Live joint off of the "High School High" soundtrack. Then, check out the Maze track that Money Boss used, 10 minutes of smoothed out soul that gets pretty heavy 6 minutes in. "Is It Because I'm Black" is another one of those Civil Rights era songs that still holds weight today. Moving along, another beautiful piece of work by the late great Minnie Riperton. I got to say I like No ID's sampling of this the best. And,lastly,we wrap this mix up with one of my favorite RIP dedications ever, Gangstarr's "In Memory of..". Primo chopped the original song up lovely, and Guru delivers some choice story telling rhymes. Enjoy and stay tuned...

01. Strange Games & Things
02. EPMD - Manslaughter
03. Real Live - Get Down For Mine
05. Money Boss Players - Sat. Nite,Sunday Morn.
06. Ryo Kawasaki - Bamboo Child
09. Wu Tang Clan - Hollow Bones
10. Minnie Riperton - Take a Little Trip
13. Biggie Smalls - Me and My Bitch(og demo mix)
15. GangStarr - In Memory Of..

Thanks to godmc for the Biggie demo and thanks to drizzle for the Maze track.
